A longtime, family-owned market catering to a diverse customer base is embarking on a new chapter of its ongoing journey.

Fresh Halal Market, which had been located in Miamisburg for 25 years, recently relocated to 721 Lyons Road in Washington Twp. for better access and a newer storefront, according to owner Muhajer “Amir” Almosawi. Located next to Planet Fitness in the Washington Park shopping center, the market carries a variety of popular and sometimes hard-to-find grocery items from destinations around the globe.

There’s also a selection of fresh meats and vegetables that are farm raised and 100% natural, Almosawi said.

The market’s customers are “all kinds of people,” include those with Italian, Greek, German, Russian, Turkish and Indian backgrounds, just to name a few, plus numerous countries throughout the Middle East, he said.

“It’s a wide range of ethnicities that buy our products,” Almosawi said. “We have a good variety of Indian spices, Russian spices and Turkish coffee, (plus a) big selection of teas and coffee that everyone loves from all ethnicities and we keep all pricing very competitive as well, especially for the fruits and veggies.”

The business offers everything from New York strip steaks and ribeye steaks to lamb, goat and all cuts of chicken. Deliveries of meat and dairy products occur three times a week to ensure consistent quality, Almosawi said.

“It’s very important for us because we, in our past years, have noticed that when we had delivery once a week or bi-weekly, especially for the meat and dairy, it forced us to buy bigger quantities to where we were forced to freeze more,” he said. “Now, when we have deliveries three times a week, we we don’t have to overstock to where expirations will go bad, and at the same time, we’re keeping the freshness as fresh as possible for seven days a week.”

Founded in downtown Dayton in 1993 by Almosawi’s father, Majid, the business grew to include Almosawi’s brothers, Faez, Majed and Hayder. It opened a second location in Miamisburg in 1999, which Almosawi took over in 2010.

“I didn’t live in Ohio all my life, but I came every summer, and I worked with them, and I loved the business, and it became a part of my life,” he said.

Almosawi said customers come from as far away as Columbus, Troy and West Chester Twp. to shop at the market. He said Halal slaughter is one of the purest ways to slaughter an animal and also “a straight kill, avoiding as much torture as possible.”

“A lot of people who want 100% natural and farm-raised meats, they usually buy halal nowadays,” he said. “It’s become a more natural way. Not just a natural way of killing, but ... also a natural way of feeding, a natural way of upbringing and so on.”
